Location: A8

Another inhabited area, this one sheltering an unusual number of basilisks. It can be either quite easy or rather hard to travel through it, depending on the strategy you use. If you are wise, you’ll have the following items before venturing in the area: Potions of Mirrored Eyes, Protection from Petrification spells, Protection from Petrification scrolls and Stone to Flesh scrolls. Since basilisks’ gaze can turn your party members to stone, it is imperative that you use one or more of these items. Also note that if your PC is turned to stone, it is considered as equal to death and you have to reload the game. NOTE: this area was designed for a medium-high level party. Be careful with basilisks, they are dangerous! If you don’t feel up to the challenge, avoid the area.

1- SHAR-TEEL:

Shar-Teel (CE, Human Female, Fighter) will challenge your best male champion to a duel. If she wins, she asks you to give her 20 gp. and if she loses, she offers to join your party. She also warns you that should one of your party members cheat, she would kill him(this was not tested, though). The fight is not hard and she is a descent fighter, so if you have an evil aligned party you should probably take her with you. Otherwise just refuse and you get 300 Exp.

Note: Having Shar-Teel in your party will help you deal with Angelo later in Chapter 7, since she is his daughter.

2- KORAX THE GHOUL:

A ghoul who wants to be your friend! You can use him as a shield since he is immune to Basilisks’ gaze. He acts as if Dire Charmed and will eventually turn against your party, so act quickly. You can also kill him for some experience.

3- TAMAH:

An adventurer who has been turned to stone by a Basilisk, like a lot of others in the area. This one can be helped, however, if you have a Stone to Flesh scroll at hand. Once you have done so you can talk to her and there are 2 ways of dealing with the situation:

Good way: Accept her gratefulness but don’t ask for any rewards. This will give you 300 Exp. and +1 Reputation.

Evil way: Ask for a payment. Since she has nothing left on her, she gives you her house, which is located North-West of Nashkel(the area where you meet Drizzt). The house has been abandoned for a long time, however, so you won’t be able to use it. Your reputation also decreases by 1.

4- MUTAMIN:

An insane gnome who has been using basilisks to turn travelers to stone. Your only way to deal with him is to fight. He is a potent magic user but should be easy to deal with. He is worth 1200 Exp. and carries some loot: Adventurer’s Robe, 120 gp., 2 Potions of Healing and 2 scrolls: Horror and Stinking Cloud. There area also 2 Basilisks near him, a Lesser and a Greater, so watch out.

5- KIRIAN, PETER, LINDIN AND BAERIN:

Some adventurers like yourselves who are a bit too insolent for most people’s taste. It is about time to teach them a lesson, although the fight might be avoided(not sure about this one). If you decide to fight, know that Kirian is a Fighter/Mage worth 1200 Exp., that Peter is a Cleric worth 1200 Exp., that Lindin is a Fighter worth 600 Exp. and that Baerin is an Archer worth 300 Exp. The fight can be quite challenging, especially for a low level party. You might wish to take them one by one and to use such spells as Fireball and Dire Charm. The spell casters should be taken care of first. They have some very good loot: Golden Girdle, Bracers of Defense AC7, Plate Mail, 2 Long Swords +1, Morning Star +1, Potion of Absorption, Potion of Invisibility, Potion of Explosions, Oil of Fiery Burning, 40 Arrows +1, 385 gp. and some scrolls: Protection from Evil, Infravision and Charm Person.
